Donald Gene Olson

Donald Gene Olson was born August 4, 1945, in Eugene, Oregon.  He died peacefully, February 1, 2018, in Tacoma, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Pearl Olson, his parents, Clara and Walter Osterberg, and his brother, Roy Gish.  Don graduated from Wilson High School.

After high school he served 4 years in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. After the war he started working for JJ Newberry’s. He worked his way up at JJ Newberry’s, eventually becoming a manager of his own store. Due to his father’s passing, Don and Lucille returned to Tacoma with their children.

He worked a few jobs before he started in the car business. He excelled quickly at car sales and eventually became the Sales Manager. He worked for various dealerships in the area; Arnie Dahl Ford, Steven Motor Co., Gilchrist Chevrolet, and Maple Leaf Motors.

After leaving the car business, Don and Lucille started living in Puerto Vallarta part of the year, eventually living there full-time. It was then that he founded the bar, CAPTAIN DON’S. The bar would become his pride and joy.  After Lucille’s passing it would become his lifeline. He would own and operate the bar until medical problems that occurred after Lucille’s death forced him to sell. Thankfully, he was able to sell CAPTAIN DON’s to a long-time employee, Bernice Martin Del Campo. After the sale he was still around to see his numerous friends, who had become his family. After learning he was terminal he wanted so badly to return to CAPTAIN DON’S and his PV family. Thankfully, he passed peacefully in his sleep.

Don is survived by his son, Brian and his wife, Kim; daughter, Kim and her husband, Mike; brother-in-law, Harry “Scotty” Mason; sister-in-law, Marjorie Montano; several grandchildren; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his PV Family. He is also survived by his loving partner, Raquel Davila Reynaga and her family, of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
