Greta Lue Fjermedal

Greta was born August 31, 1927, in Clear Lake, South Dakota, the first of five children born to Orton J. and Marjorie H. Peterson.  She died in Everett, Washington February 4. 2018, at the Silver Lake Brookdale Memory Care Center at the age of 90.

She continued to live in Clear Lake until 1942, when, at the age of fifteen, her family moved to Tacoma, Washington. She furthered her education, graduating from Knapp Business College in Tacoma.  Her first job was personal secretary to Marcus Nalley of Nalley Fine Foods, where she remained for many years.  Whenever a new food product was in the stage of development, Marcus would give a sample to Greta to gain her opinion as to its suitability.  Spending time with the Nalley family is where Greta learned her love for fishing and duck hunting.

From there, Greta went to United Pacific Insurance, where she was secretary to    the President of the Company.  It was several years later that Greta pursued her deep interest in Interior Design, and earned her Interior Designer Certificate, working at Saxton’s Home Furnishings for many years.  Sometime later, Greta returned to United Pacific/Reliance, and from there retired as Assistant Personnel Manager.

Greta married Elmer K. Fjermedal (1921-2013), December 7, 1967, and became step-mother to Kathleen, Lyle, Grant, Marc and Ross. They spent a long life together in Tacoma, celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary before Elmer’s death.  Greta spent her last four years in Bothell and Everett, living close to her sister and family.

Greta was pre-deceased by her husband Elmer, her parents Orton and Marjorie, and her oldest brother, Richard, who died at the age of three days.

She is survived by her sister, Faye (Don) Hall, Matthew, Allison, Warren, Adam, Sarah and Peter; two brothers, Stuart (Annette), Erik; and Rodger (Connie), Amy, Martha, Ruth and Sarah; as well as Elmer’s children, Kathleen, (Cayetano), David, (deceased); Lyle (Tamara) Eric and Teresa; Grant (Theresa), Emma, Clara, Grace; Marc (Joan) Martha, Matt, and Michael; Ross (Cheri), Chelsea and Cheryl; thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Greta and Elmer were long-time, active members of Life Center Church in Tacoma.  They and Elmer’s sister, Clara, together established a scholarship endowment at Life Christian Academy to provide financial aid to help several students each year.
